BTCCPages.com: Race 2 report

The podium for race two was a repeat of the first race as Jason Plato took his seventh victory of the season, ahead of the ever-consistent Fabrizio Giovanardi and his rear-gunner Tom Onslow-Cole.

Plato ensured that SEAT’s successful Knockhill record continued, by repeating the double victory achieved at the Scottish track last year by his teammate Darren Turner. But the win only reduced the deficit to championship leader Giovanardi by four points, with the Vauxhall driver once again finishing right behind in second.

It was status quo among the leaders at the start of the race, although Mat Jackson made the most of his rear-wheel drive launch to pass Gordon Shedden and claim fourth into the steep drop at the SEAT curves.

After a disappointing DNF in race one, Darren Turner quickly set about making amends this time out, moving into the top ten inside four laps when he passed Mike Jordan’s John Guest Racing Honda Integra.

Jason Plato was once again on good form at the front, leading by half a second by the end of lap five. Local favourite Gordon Shedden gave the crowd something to cheer about when he passed Mat Jackson after the BMW ran wide out of Carlube. That put Shedden up to fourth, but that was as far as he would get, with the top three seemingly in a separate race.

Indeed Shedden’s Honda Civic was at the front of train of cars battling for fourth position for much of the second half of the race, coming under pressure from Jackson as well as Colin Turkington and Rob Collard.

Darren Turner’s progress through the pack continued as he passed Adam Jones, Andy Jordan and Rob Collard. His next target was Colin Turkington and the pair spent several laps locking horns until Turner challenged at the Real Radio hairpin on lap 23. Turkington pushed his rival wide on the exit from the corner, which slowed the SEAT down as he lost traction on the grass. Sitting patiently behind the pair, closing them down lap by lap had been Motorbase Performance’s Rob Collard. Collard seized his opportunity when the Turkington and Turner clashed, easily moving past Turner and beating former teammate Turkington on the run to the first corner.

Plato took the chequered flag to clinch his victory after 24 laps, with a 1.3 second advantage over Fabrizio Giovanardi in second. Tom Onslow-Cole finished third, ahead of Gordon Shedden and Mat Jackson. Sixth was Collard, trailed by Turkington and Turner, whilst Andrew Jordan and Matt Neal rounded out the top ten.

Racewinner Jason Plato said, “We’re having a great day, with my car at least. I can’t do any better than win, so if that’s not good enough at the end of the year, well that’s the way it is. I think from the way the points are, that’s really the situation. I guess we’re really into a development year for next year now.”
